About Arthur Hills

The name Arthur Hills is well recognized in the world of golf. To date, there are more than 150 Arthur Hills and Associates' designed golf courses in the United States alone. Hills, a past president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, has designed golf courses for many golf course communities, private country clubs, resorts, and public golf developments.

Arthur Hills and Associates' reputation rests on its ability to design courses that are playable yet challenging, while creating with an overriding sense of environmental sensitivity. Hills has stated, "We try to build a course that is natural, that relates to the land and doesn't require a tremendous amount of earth moving, always keeping in mind the strategy of the game and the elements that provide beauty in a golf course."

Steve Forrest, Senior Associate with Arthur Hills and Associates, is a registered landscape architect and has been a member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects since 1985. He has collaborated in the design of many new courses and has also worked with a number of renovation projects. His design approach, which has been shaped by the "traditionalist" philosophy of Arthur Hills, is to create a challenging yet playable course that highlights the beauty and natural features of a given site.

The firm also has been called upon to refine or renovate more than 100 courses, including renowned clubs including Oakmont, Inverness and Oakland Hills. Hills was instrumental in guiding Oakmont and Oakland Hills through several renovation improvements in preparation for their respective U.S. Open Championships in 1994 and 1996. He played a similar role with Inverness Club in preparation for the 1993 PGA Championship.

In 1995, Collier's Reserve Golf Club (Naples, FL) became the first course in the world to receive Audubon International's "Cooperative Sanctuary Signature" status, in recognition of its environmentally sensitive design. Also working in conjunction with Audubon International, the Oitavos Golfe Clube (near Lisbon, Portugal) is Europe's first Audubon "Gold Signature" golf course.

In 1992, Golf Digest honored Arthur Hills by naming The Golf Club of Georgia (Atlanta) and Harbour Pointe Golf Club (Seattle) as the "Best New Private" and "Best New Public" courses of the year. It was the first time a single architect captured both awards in the same year.
